Mental math methods that make everyday calculation faster
Five reliable techniques for adding, subtracting, multiplying and estimating in your head, with worked examples you can reuse.

Round, then compensate
Most mental arithmetic gets easier when you replace an awkward number with a round one and repair the difference afterwards. To add 47 + 38, add 47 + 40 = 87, then take away the 2 you added too many: 85. To subtract 63 − 29, subtract 30 to get 33, then give back 1: 34. The method works because you only ever handle one small correction at a time.
Say the correction out loud or write it down while you learn. The goal is not speed on the first day; it is to make the round-then-repair reflex automatic, so that speed follows on its own.
Break numbers into parts
Multiplication becomes a sum of easy products. 7 × 23 is 7 × 20 plus 7 × 3, so 140 + 21 = 161. 6 × 48 is 6 × 50 minus 6 × 2, so 300 − 12 = 288. Choose the split that produces numbers you already know, and keep the partial results in words: “one hundred forty, plus twenty-one”.
Division follows the same idea in reverse. To divide 156 by 12, look for a multiple you know: 12 × 10 = 120, leaving 36, and 12 × 3 = 36. The answer is 13.
Double and halve
When one factor is even, halve it and double the other: 16 × 25 becomes 8 × 50, then 4 × 100 = 400. Multiplying by 5 is the same as multiplying by 10 and halving: 5 × 86 = 860 ÷ 2 = 430. These moves turn many products into a single easy step.
Percentages from 10 %
Find 10 % by moving the decimal point, then build the rest. 15 % of 80 is 8 + 4 = 12. 5 % is half of 10 %; 1 % is a tenth of it. A 30 % discount on 45 leaves 70 %, so 45 − (3 × 4.5) = 31.5. Estimating a tip or a discount this way is usually faster than reaching for a calculator.
Check before you trust the answer
Two quick checks catch most slips. First, the last digit: 7 × 23 must end in 1 because 7 × 3 does. Second, the size: 7 × 23 sits between 7 × 20 = 140 and 7 × 25 = 175. If a result fails either check, redo the step rather than the whole calculation.
